Museums are some of the most popular tourist attractions and are usually places that many travelers want to visit on their travels. However, the experience of visiting a museum can be disappointing, even for seasoned museum-goers, if not done correctly. After getting it wrong a few times and then learning how to properly visit museums, I wanted to share this guide with you for the perfect museum visit.
There are many ways to properly visit museums. And many more to understand everything wrong. It all depends, of course, on your interests and the way you explore new places. However, there are some basic rules that you must follow if you want to know how to properly visit a museum.
What if you don’t like museums?

Then don’t visit them! I’m not a big fan of adrenaline parks, so I rarely end up with one while traveling.
Same thing with museums. Do you feel you should visit the Mona Lisa when in Paris? With that said, don’t you really appreciate the painting? Well don’t! Your experience will not be the best, you will probably not like the photo anymore and you will lose a few hours that you could spend doing some fun in Paris.
A guide to visiting the exemplary museum
However, if you love art and history, and feel like a true cultural tourist, I would like to give you some advice on how to properly visit the museum. I broke them down into three steps to make your visit to the museum more enjoyable.
1 / Before visiting the museum: How to prepare for a visit to the museum
A good visit to the museum begins with a successful setting. Here are some of my tips
Obviously, we all have different interests. I would be completely bored in a sports museum. But give me a show about fashion and I will be amazed. You understand what it is about.
If you are going to a big city with multiple museums to visit, do your research and see which ones are most interesting to you.
If you love old masters and visit Amsterdam then the Rijksmuseum is the place to be. If you want to learn more about Vincent van Gogh during your European trip, the Orsay in Paris or the Van Gogh Museum in the Dutch capital should be on your list.
Finding the best museums based on your interests in the city you’ll be visiting before your trip is one of the most important tips on how to visit the museum properly.
# – On the website, find out which group it is in
Well, you have chosen the museum or several that you would like to visit.
The next step is to explore the museum. Visit their website and see the highlights there. Do they house some of the most famous artifacts in the world? Or do you like a painter? Maybe they have a nice collection of art style that you like? It’s a good idea to check all of this before you travel so you can better plan your museum visit.
I would also like to search the museum’s website before visiting to see if there are any special events happening during my time there. Temporary exhibitions, lectures, or art workshops can be a great way to make your visit more enjoyable.
If some of the artwork is on loan or some galleries are temporarily closed, you will also know how to better plan your museum visit.
# – Check if you can find any videos about this museum
There is no such thing as watching an excellent video of the museum you are about to visit before visiting it. You will get acquainted with the collection and see the artwork you want to see. You will also learn a little about it before you actually see it.
Watching some museum videos before your visit can also be helpful in getting used to the museum inside.
# – Buy your ticket online
There is nothing worse than staring at your visit by standing in line in front of the museum for a few hours to enter. This is the sad truth when you visit many of these world famous museums.
However, be smart and buy the museum ticket online before your visit. You can often do this on the museum website. Or, you can do like me and use the Tiqets platform (here the link) to buy all of your museum tickets online.
This way, you can go straight to the entrance and immediately enter the museum.
# – Reserve a tour of the museum
Visiting a museum on a guided tour makes a big difference.
